Abstract:

The climate and culture of law firms is changing drastically and rapidly. The old model of life long stability for those who attain partnership status no longer applies. Today the ranks of partners are shrinking, ownership power is becoming more concentrated and growth is coming from new sources such as mergers and lateral entry.

This article discusses how leadership training can facilitate the transition from the old model to a more effective and adaptive alternative. Leadership is often confused with management. The latter is about the creation and implementation of processes to produce predictable results. Leadership is about producing change. This article discusses what will be necessary for law firms to succeed and thrive in the future. It draws heavily on research conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership.
